10 Dinge, die du über Flüssigkeitszufuhr wissen musst

10 things you need to know about hydration

Malte Wagenbach
  • You sweat whenever you do something that makes you really hot, like working out or mowing the lawn in oppressive heat.
  • .
  • Sweat contains fluid and electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride.
  • While all electrolytes are important for your body's function and performance, sodium is by far the most important electrolyte, because a decrease in the concentration of sodium in your body - called hyponatremia - can have extremely negative consequences, ranging from malaise to seizures, excessive urination, and even death.
  • There are between 400 mg and 1200 mg of sodium in a liter of sweat (our le melo Electrolytes mix contains 1200 mg of sodium per liter)
  • .
  • Because sweat contains both fluid and electrolytes, drinking only water to replace the fluid you lose when you sweat can be very dangerous, as it is the fastest way to reduce or dilute your body's sodium concentration. If you pee a lot while exercising and get really sick, you may be hyponatremic and need to take something with a lot of salt. Or you may just be eating salty foods with what you're drinking.
  • Theoretically, the best thing you can drink when you sweat is your own sweat. But drinking sweat tastes gross (trust us, our founder, Malte Wagenbach, has tried his own sweat and he doesn't recommend it). Plus, it's hard to catch all the sweat you lose when you sweat, unless you have one of those cool suits from the movie Dune that recycles your sweat and urine.
  • .
  • Sweat contains no artificial colors, artificial flavors (or any flavors at all), artificial sweeteners, preservatives, or any other weird ingredients.
  • Most sports drinks contain water, electrolytes and some form of sugar to provide a small source of energy to help maintain blood sugar levels and fuel working muscles. Unfortunately, most sports drinks also contain artificial colors, flavors, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, as well as other strange ingredients that require a course in organic chemistry to understand.
  • .
  • Our experience at le melo is that most sports drinks don't contain enough electrolytes but too much sugar. We've also found that all those excess ingredients make you sick if you drink too much of them. Our le melo Hydration Drink Mix has nearly double the amount of key electrolytes per liter than nationally leading sports drinks.
  • .
  • Without fruit, citric acid, and sugar, our Sport Hydration Drink Mix just tastes like sweat. But with a little fruit, citric acid and sugar, our Sport Hydration Drink Mix tastes clean and light. So if you sweat a lot and need something to rehydrate that replaces what you lose with sweat and nothing extra, try our Sport Hydration Mix.
